The world today is turning towards renewable energy. Global warming and climate change has finally opened the eyes of nations across the world. This seems to be the only way forward to bring down carbon footprint substantially and slowly reverse the greenhouse effect. The movement for renewable energy has gained momentum and in India too, the government is encouraging the shift to alternate energy sources. As of 2016, solar power was just 1% of total worldwide electricity production but is growing by leaps and bounds at approximately 33% per annum.

Labour India Gurukulam Public school has joined this mass movement by installing a small solar farm in the premises.  The idea is to facilitate the sustainable generation of green and quality powerfacilitate the sustainable generation of green and quality power and increase the awareness level in children and their families about the importance of renewable power.

To put it simply, solar power is harnessing the energy of the sun which is perennial for a country like India.  The power thus generated can be used like conventional power. It is clean, quiet and renewable (unlike fossil fuels like coal and petroleum). A solar farm is essentially arrays of solar panels with photovoltaic cells that capture and convert the solar energy into DC form of electricity.

The total output from this farm per day is 50kw. The energy generated is stored in batteries for use various school requirements.  Unlike a household, a school has multiple uses of power during the day. Any excess power is given to the government body KSEB. The initiative at the school has garnered appreciation and support from various quarters.

The solar farm being installed in school has multiple advantages. While it produces power for school, it also provides the children the first hand experience of a solar farm and instills in them the value for renewable energy sources like Sun, wind, wave etc. Change to renewable energy can only save our planet. What better place can one think of to educate the generation of tomorrow about environment friendly sustainable energybut a school campus.

With this initiative, Labour India Gurukulam Public School hopes to popularize the shift to renewable power and become a part of an awakening India that is energy sufficient.
